Irish House Histories

If you ever wondered who walked through the rooms of your house in the past, you may be interested in a Timeline House History

A Timeline House History makes a wonderful gift for the new owner of an old house or might complement the restoration of an old building, adding context to its history and identifying the previous occupiers.  Businesses such as hotels and restaurants can use our House History to tell their guests about the history of building, adding depth and historical context to their visit.

Timeline have been working with the makers of ‘The Great House Revival‘ for RTE to provide the history of the buildings featured in the programme.  Timeline director Nicola Morris presents a short history segment in each programme.

Timeline offer a number of house history research services.

Full House History

Irish House HistoriesOur team of researchers, historians and genealogists will trace the history of the building from the date of its construction to the mid 20th century to establish when and why the house was built and who lived there during its lifetime.  A Timeline House History will include a detailed history of the building, biographical details on the residents of the house, the very people who walked through your rooms before you, as well as historical context, looking at local events around the site of the building that may have had an impact on the occupiers.

Our research is presented in a narrative history of the building, its occupiers and the surrounding area with images from maps, documents and photographs (if found).  You will receive a bound hard copy of the report as well as a digital copy.  Click here to view our history of 17 Eustace Street which was commissioned by the Irish Theatre Institute.

To-date we have undertaken dozens of histories ranging from country mansions, hotels, hunting lodges and gate houses to 19th century mills and factories.  We have even researched the history of The Grand Central Cafe on O’Connell Street to document its role in the 1916 Rising.

Of course all houses are different and were built at different times for different reasons.  Before starting a house history, we will undertake a preliminary review to determine whether there is enough source material available to complete a full and comprehensive history of your building.  In some cases there will be an absence of source material, which will make tracing the history of your house quite difficult and may not result the detailed report we usually produce.  Generally, there is not enough material to write the history of a house built in the 20th century.

A full house history costs EUR1800 (plus VAT).  If you are interested in commissioning a history of your house, please contact us.  In order to undertake the preliminary review we need to establish the exact location of the building.  Please provide us with a street address and/or a map illustrating the exact location of the building (a link to an online map is acceptable if the location of the building is marked).

Short House History

If your house was built after the 1870s, a full house history may not be appropriate, due to lack of detailed source material.  In this instance we can provide a brief history of your house and its occupants together with a history of your street and local area.  This report will also include maps, photographs and documents, where available

The cost of a short house history for buildings constructed after the 1870s is EUR600 (plus VAT).   If you are interested in commissioning a history of your house, please contact us.  In order to undertake the preliminary review we need to establish the exact location of the building.  Please provide us with a street address and/or a map illustrating the exact location of the building (a link to an online map is acceptable if the location of the building is marked).
