Irish Citizenship by Descent & Foreign Birth Registration

Under Irish law any person with an Irish born parent or grandparent is entitled to full Irish (and EU) citizenship. This is referred to as Irish Citizenship by Descent. Irish Citizenship by Descent is not granted automatically, you must first go through an extensive application process to have your name registered in the Foreign Births Register, which then entitles you to Irish citizenship and an Irish passport.   • Please type the name of the area you were born in. Eg Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
  • Please provide us with the information you feel entitles you to Irish citizenship by descent. Include information on your Irish born parent or grandparent including any of the following if known: Their full names, their date and place of birth, date of death, date of marriage, date of emigration. Feel free to include any other information that you feel might be relevant to your application. Do not worry if you can not supply all this information, our genealogy researchers can asses what information you do have and take it from there.



2 – Irish Citizenship Application Documents Service

For those undertaking the application process themselves and who have already begun gathering relevant documents in their country of residence, Timeline can still assist you in acquiring the necessary copies of Irish records. Timeline offer a fast and efficient service and will provide you with the legally accepted Irish documentation required to make your application.

Documents required for your Irish Citizenship application:

  • Your long form full birth certificate which shows your parents names, ages and places of birth, if recorded.
  • Your original or certified civil or state marriage certificate or marriage licence.
  • A long form full birth certificate for your parent, the descendant of your Irish born grandparent.
  • The original or certified civil or state marriage certificate or marriage licence for your parents.
  • If deceased, a death certificate for your parent, descendant of your Irish born grandparent.  If living, a notarised copy of an official form of photo ID.
  • A long form full birth certificate for your Irish born grandparent showing the names of their parents.
  • The original or certified civil or state marriage certificate or marriage licence for your Irish born grandparent.
  • If deceased, the death certificate for your Irish born grandparent.

You will also be required to present passport photographs and various forms of identification and proof of address. If a birth certificate for your Irish born grandparent cannot be found, we can provide the legally accepted alternatives.
