House & Site Histories
If you ever wondered who walked through the rooms of your house before you, you may be interested in our House Histories. We can trace the History of your House from the date of its construction to the mid 20th century to establish when and why the house was built and who lived there during its lifetime. We can determine when various additions or changes were made to the building and whether it changed its function over the course of its history. When documented, these changes can be of particular interest to architects and architectural historians. To-date we have undertaken dozens of histories ranging from country mansions hotels, hunting lodges and gate houses to 19th century mills and factories.
It is often possible to provide biographical details on notable residents of the house, the very people who walked through your rooms before you. We also provide a brief history of the area in which the house was built.
We provide a full report, including copies of maps, photographs and other documents (where available). The report is provided in hard copy and as a digital copy on CD.
Of course all houses are different and were built at different times for different reasons. Before undertaking a house history, we will complete a preliminary report to determine whether there is enough source material available to complete a full and comprehensive history of your house. In some cases there will be an absence of source material, which will make tracing the history of your house quite difficult and may not provide the detailed report we expect to produce.
If your house was built after the 1870s, a full house history may not be appropriate, due to lack of detailed source material. In this instance we can provide a brief history of your house and its occupants together with a history of your street and local area. This report will also include maps, photographs and documents, where available.
We also undertake to research the history of a building or particular business as well as the history of a plot of land or specific site. These reports are often used for developers, who are looking for suitable names for their development and local history for their brochures.
If you are interested in any aspect of our House & Site History service, please contact us and we can prepare a preliminary report.
